Division of Emergency Imaging

The Division of Emergency Imaging, part of NYU Langone Health’s Department of Radiology, supports emergency and trauma services at all NYU Langone locations and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, with attending radiologists providing services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We provide the most accessible, rapid, and interactive imaging services possible for emergency department physicians and trauma surgeons who care for critically ill patients.

Our core trauma and emergency imaging faculty are fellowship trained in several disciplines including pediatric trauma, trauma imaging, neuroradiology, and abdominal imaging. We also regularly participate in multidisciplinary trauma meetings and engage in ongoing quality improvement efforts.

As nationally and internationally recognized experts in the areas of trauma and emergency radiology, we present research at local, national, and international meetings; publish in leading radiology journals; and write books and book chapters. We also serve in leadership positions for specialty societies, including the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER).

Emergency Imaging Education

We primarily supervise and train radiology residents in emergency imaging. We also provide emergency imaging elective training experiences for medical students. Our faculty give regular emergency and trauma radiology didactic lectures and supervise case conferences for residents.

Emergency Imaging Research

Our current areas of research include artificial intelligence methods in emergency and trauma imaging, dual-energy CT (DECT) in the emergency setting, and optimizing radiology preparedness in the event of a mass casualty incident. Other areas of interest include improving patient turnaround time in emergency imaging services, optimizing trauma CT protocols, and expanding the use of three-dimensional (3D) CT reconstruction.

We offer emergency and trauma imaging research opportunities for medical students and residents who have an interest in emergency radiology.

Emergency Imaging Clinical Services

The Division of Emergency Imaging team provides services for the Ronald O. Perelman Center for Emergency Services at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, as well as three other Level 1 Trauma Centers—the Emergency Department at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn; the Emergency Department at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island; and Bellevue.

We collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of primary care physicians and subspecialists, including emergency medicine physicians and trauma surgeons, to offer comprehensive, coordinated emergency and trauma imaging services to all of our patients. We also play an active role in optimizing and streamlining all emergent imaging.

The depth and breadth of emergency imaging services is unique, since it spans all modalities and organ systems. We play a vital role in the timely, head-to-toe diagnosis and management of patients who are acutely ill, injured, and traumatized. This includes providing imaging services for brain and nervous system disorders; airway, breathing, and lung conditions; acute heart and vascular conditions; and acute disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and musculoskeletal systems.

We interpret urgent radiographs, CT scans, MRI scans, and ultrasound imaging studies. We also perform comprehensive imaging in polytrauma and for acute stroke, as part of services at NYU Langone’s Comprehensive Stroke Center (a Joint Commission–certified Primary Stroke Center) and for the entire range of conditions that bring patients to the emergency department.
